The laser marking procedure enables permanent markings to be made on plastic surfaces with a visually controlled laser beam. Laser Marking Masterbatch can be used to identify part numbers or product information to be permanently marked compared to a label or prints which may peel off or wear off over time. The result of the laser marking depends, to a significant extent, on the type of plastic, additives such as dyes and the type of laser.
One of the features because of which it is difficult to mark plastics successfully is the wide variety of compounds available, including polycarbonate, polyethylene, and silicone; furthermore, common fillers, extenders, and additives, as well as colours, can also affect marks on plastics.
If the plastic cannot be properly marked because of its properties, it can usually be altered with a suitable laser marking masterbatch or additive for plastic laser marking. Material optimisation with 2% – 3% addition of laser marking masterbatch or additives is often essential for achieving an optimal marking contrast.
Laser Marking Masterbatch operates by absorbing the laser energy and causing limited heating, for a brief period, creating a dark mark obtained from the burning or charring on the surface or a light mark obtained when the laser causes the polymer to foam. Both light and dark marks are permanent and resistant to light, abrasion and chemicals.
